"I have come to cast fire upon the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled! [50] But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished! [51] Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division; [52] for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. [53] They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law." -Luke 12:49-53
"Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; [13] but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. [14] If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. [15] Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler; [16] but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name. [17] For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? [18] And IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE godless MAN AND THE SINNER? [19] Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right." -1 Peter 4:12-19
Jesus Christ warned us! Peter warned us! Even John the Revelator told us-
From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. [16] And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS." -Revelation 19:15-16
There is a difference between the type of suffering we endure for being Christians and the type of suffering we face because of sin. Let me make that clear right now. The type of suffering we face as believers is known as “persecution.”
Some examples of persecution are losing your job because you refuse to do something due to your obedience to God, or maybe you end a relationship with someone who is not a true believer…things like that.
But suffering as an “evildoer” as Peter writes can of course refer to suffering punishment from the world authorities for breaking laws and so forth, but it can also be referring to Christ circumcising our hearts and allowing us to go through suffering in order to “cut away and destroy” (see Biblical definition of circumcision) the flesh nature in us.
Right now, more than ever, the church is experiencing the baptism of God’s fiery wrath, bathing us clean in His anger in order that we will FINALLY repent and surrender to Him in humble obedience. God isn’t looking for a worldly bride who has the marks of sin, but a bride washed clean without spot or blemish!
