He Who Has Ears, Let Him Hear!
“For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.” Matthew 13:17 (emphasis mine)
What does all of this mean? What did Jesus mean by His statement, “He who has ears, let him hear”? Is it possible there is something even deeper than we realize? Is Jesus trying to tell us who are reading it today something more? Absolutely!
Even His disciples asked, “But why do you speak to them in parables?” Jesus explains that to them it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them (the others) it has not been granted. In other words, it is not for everyone to know.
So who then is Jesus talking to when He says, “He who has ears, let him hear”? Most people teach this merely means, “Pay attention!” But then if that’s all He meant by it, it would then seem absurd that only certain people can comprehend it.
But then He talks about the wheat and the tares (the true bride of Christ and the apostates who appear to be of the bride, but are not) and has much to say about the tares. How does one know the difference between the wheat and the tares?
Well, a farmer knows the difference because that is his profession. He is skilled in plants and farming. But many common people don’t know the difference, believe it or not, between certain types of weeds and a plant that is not a weed. There are some weeds that don’t look like weeds. And, after all, a tare looks just like wheat! In fact, it is called “false wheat” in the Strong’s Concordance!
But Jesus told us in another passage, Matthew 7:17-20, that we will know them by their fruit. But again, how will we recognize good fruit or bad fruit? And, everyone focuses on the fruit, but what about the trees producing the fruit? After all, Jesus pointed out good trees, bad trees and good fruit and bad fruit.
The answer to how to recognize? By prayerfully studying the word of God! Our time with the Lord, daily, should be the most important thing that happens in our each and every day. We must be skilled in the word of God just as a farmer is skilled in farming, or else we won’t recognize deception or know how to know the difference, along with many other things.
In this study, we will go over Matthew 13, in detail, and find out the very depths and roots of what Jesus Christ is trying to tell us today.
