What if the real falling away didn’t begin in our time — but 1,700 years ago? Discover the shocking truth behind how politics crept into the church, replaced the Holy Spirit, and gave birth to the modern “American Jesus.”
For generations, believers have expected “the great falling away” to be a future event—a sudden collapse of faith before Christ’s return. Yet it began long ago, quietly and unnoticed by most. It started when the Church traded persecution for power, purity for peace, and the cross for compromise.
HOW THE CHURCH TRADED TRUTH FOR POWER
From the Edict of Milan to today’s Dominionist movements, history has repeated itself. The same spirit that once corrupted the early Church is alive again, deceiving millions under the banner of “peace and safety,” as the true teachings of Christ continue to be diluted, reshaped, and commercialized to suit the comfort of the crowd.
Once, the church stood as a light against darkness — bold, pure, and unashamed of the cross. But today, in many places, that light has dimmed beneath the glow of entertainment, politics, and self-serving religion.
Jesus warned that “many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.” (Matthew 24:11)
Paul spoke of a time when “they will not endure sound doctrine, but after their own lusts shall heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.” (2 Timothy 4:3)
That time has arrived.
The Turning Point: The Edict of Milan and the Illusion of Peace and Safety
For nearly three centuries, the early followers of Christ endured persecution and death. Yet through those trials, the church remained pure — separate from worldly power. Then came A.D. 313, when Emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan, declaring:

“When I, Constantine Augustus, as well as I, Licinius Augustus … were considering everything that pertained to the public welfare and security … we thought … that among other things … those regulations pertaining to the reverence of the Divinity ought certainly to be made first, so that we might grant to the Christians and to all others full authority to observe that religion which each preferred.”
— Edict of Milan, 313 A.D. (source)
This was followed by the assurance:
“That no one whatsoever should be denied the opportunity to give his heart to the observance of the Christian religion … and that compensation should be made to those from whom any of the property was taken.”
— (Fordham University Medieval Sourcebook)
To the persecuted believers, this was the long-awaited peace — freedom at last! Churches reopened, worship was legal, and Christianity was accepted. But what looked like deliverance soon became the seed of compromise.
From Persecution to Patronage: When the State Entered the Sanctuary
With the Edict of Milan, the church gained protection — but it also gained a new master. No longer hunted, it was honored. No longer poor, it was funded. But in receiving the favor of kings, the church began to reflect the kingdoms of this world more than the Kingdom of God.
Historians call this the “Constantinian Shift.” The persecuted became powerful, bishops gained political influence, and emperors began to preside over church councils. The church that once stood apart now sat beside the throne of Caesar.

Temples of stone replaced catacombs of faith. Gold replaced humility. And worldly power crept into the pulpit.
“The Edict of Milan not only legitimized Christianity but also established it as a protected faith within Roman law, altering the religious landscape of the empire.”
— EBSCO Research Starter
Not long after the Edict of Milan granted peace to the church, Emperor Constantine convened the Council of Nicaea in A.D. 325. While it was meant to unify Christian doctrine, it also marked the first time a Roman emperor dictated what the church should believe. The same state that once persecuted Christians now presided over their theology. And from that point on, faith and politics were forever intertwined — shaping the institutional church that would later dominate the world.
It was the illusion of “peace and safety” that Paul warned of:
“For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them…”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:3
The peace Rome gave was not the peace of Christ — it was a political peace, purchased by compromise.
The Corruption of Peace: The Church of Power

As the empire embraced Christianity, the faith of the martyrs became the religion of the masses.
The Gospel was reshaped to please emperors. Pagan festivals were baptized and renamed. Truth was mixed with politics, and doctrine became a tool for control.
The church that once transformed the world began to be transformed by it. The sword entered the sanctuary. The throne entered the pulpit. And the “falling away” had begun.
When church met state, the power of the sword entered the sanctuary.”

From Constantine to the Modern Church: History Repeats Itself
What began in the fourth century has returned in our generation — only now, it wears a different name.
Just as the Church today mixes politics with faith in pursuit of earthly dominion, the religious leaders of Jesus’ day made the same fatal mistake. They longed for a political, military-style Messiah — a conqueror who would overthrow Rome and restore their national pride. But when the true Christ appeared, humble and holy, they rejected Him. They wanted a crown, not a cross… power, not purity. And now, history is repeating itself. The apostate church is still looking for a “political Jesus” — a savior who fits their ideology instead of the Scriptures. But the real Jesus never came to take sides in the kingdoms of men; He came to call all men to repentance and build a Kingdom not made with hands.
Today, the same dangerous blend of faith and politics has revived under movements like the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR), Dominionism, and Christian Nationalism. These ideologies teach that the church must seize political control, dominate the “seven mountains of culture,” and establish God’s Kingdom through earthly government.

But Christ never called His followers to conquer through politics — He called them to serve, preach, and suffer for the truth. His Kingdom is “not of this world.” (John 18:36)
Just as Constantine’s “peace” brought corruption into the early church, so too does this modern alliance between pulpits and politics pervert the Gospel.
When the church becomes a tool of earthly power, it always loses its heavenly anointing.
The New Apostolic Reformation claims new revelation, new apostles, and dominion over nations — yet it mirrors the same ancient error: trading spiritual authority for worldly influence.
Dominionism seeks to legislate righteousness rather than preach repentance. Christian Nationalism replaces the cross with a flag and confuses patriotism with holiness.
In truth, these movements are not revival — they are revivals of Rome: the same merging of church and empire that began the long decline centuries ago.
The prophet Hosea warned, “Ephraim has mixed himself among the peoples; Ephraim is a cake not turned.” (Hosea 7:8)
In other words, half-baked — part holy, part worldly — neither pleasing to God nor useful for His purpose.

The Modern Warning: Come Out of Her, My People
The Edict of Milan was not merely a decree of freedom; it was the opening of a door — a door through which the enemy quietly entered. The same door stands open today wherever the church joins itself to the powers of this world in the name of “influence.”

The book of Revelation warns of a harlot church that rides upon the beast — a faith entangled with worldly authority, drunk on its own power. (Revelation 17)
God is calling His remnant once again to separate from Babylon — from the mixture of politics, pride, and false prophecy that has polluted His house.
The falling away began when peace was preferred over purity. It deepened when politics replaced prayer. And it will end only when Christ Himself returns to cleanse His temple.
Until then, the faithful must stand apart — not as soldiers of a worldly kingdom, but as ambassadors of the one that cannot be shaken.
✝️ Final Call
The Edict of Milan gave Christians peace, but it cost them purity. Today, the modern church faces the same test. Will we choose comfort over conviction? Power over purity? The time has come to draw the line.
For as Jesus said:
“My Kingdom is not of this world.” — John 18:36
And Paul warned:
“Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” — Romans 12:2
The true church does not rule with empires — it reigns through surrender. It does not legislate holiness — it lives it. And though the world may reject it, heaven will recognize it as the Bride without spot or wrinkle, preserved for the coming of the King.
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.” — 2 Timothy 4:3
When most people think of the “falling away” the Bible warns about, they picture something sudden — a great apostasy that erupts right before the return of Christ. But what if the truth is more unsettling? What if this great departure from truth began long ago — quietly, subtly — and has been unfolding ever since the early centuries of the church?
When the Church Declared “Peace and Safety”
In A.D. 313, the Edict of Milan was signed by the Roman emperors Constantine and Licinius. This decree granted Christians freedom to worship without fear of persecution for the first time in history. The long era of bloody persecution had finally ended. Believers could now breathe freely, build churches openly, and gather without fear.
To many, it seemed like a divine victory. They said, “Peace and safety!” — but as Scripture warns, “Then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman” (1 Thessalonians 5:3).
Because the destruction was not physical, few recognized it. Yet spiritually, something began to die.
When the World Entered the Church

Before the Edict of Milan, the church was purified by persecution. Only those who truly loved Christ were willing to risk their lives for Him. But once the church was accepted — and even favored — by the Roman Empire, it became fashionable to be Christian.
Political power crept into the sanctuary. The government began to influence the church, and leaders began to compromise truth for acceptance. Pagan traditions were blended with Christian worship to attract the masses. Festivals once dedicated to idols were rebranded with Christian names.
Over time, the simplicity of Christ’s gospel — repentance, obedience, holiness, and self-denial — was replaced with ritual, ceremony, and hierarchy. The church exchanged the power of the Holy Spirit for the power of the state.
This was the beginning of the falling away — not in open rebellion, but in subtle corruption. Just as the serpent in the garden deceived Eve subtly by instilling doubt in what God had commanded; by luring her to disobedience through her feelings and emotions. Convincing her to mix good with what was evil!
“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” — 2 Timothy 3:5
The Long Descent Through the Ages
As centuries passed, false teachings took root. The church that once turned the world upside down (Acts 17:6) became the very image of the world itself, the IMAGE OF THE BEAST!
Salvation was no longer about faith and obedience to Christ’s Word, but about loyalty to institutions and men. The Word of God was chained, both literally and spiritually, as traditions of men took precedence over the commandments of God (Mark 7:8-9).
Even when reformers rose to challenge the darkness, the seeds of compromise remained. The pattern continued — each generation inheriting a more diluted version of the gospel than the last.
The enemy’s deception was slow and steady, designed not to shock the church into awakening, but to lull it into sleep.
“While men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat.” — Matthew 13:25
The Modern Church: The Final Stage of the Falling Away

Today, we see the culmination of nearly two thousand years of drift. The modern church, once born in power and holiness, now resembles the world more than the Kingdom of God.
Preachers promise prosperity instead of repentance. Sin is redefined as “struggle.” Holiness is mocked as “legalism.” The cross — once a symbol of death to self — is now used as a decoration.
Congregations are entertained, not edified. Worship is about feelings, not faith. Scripture is twisted to accommodate every lifestyle, and conviction is silenced in the name of “love.”
“They will not endure sound doctrine… and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” — 2 Timothy 4:3-4
The church no longer confronts the world; it imitates it. The Bride of Christ has traded her purity for popularity, her faith for comfort, her zeal for convenience.

A Call to Return to the Ancient Paths
Yet even now, a remnant remains — those who hunger for truth, who refuse to bow to the spirit of compromise.
God is calling His people to return to the faith once delivered to the saints (Jude 1:3). To reject the doctrines of men and rediscover the unfiltered teachings of Jesus Christ. To stand apart from the corruption that has crept into the church since that fateful day when Rome first declared “peace and safety.”
The true followers of Christ will not be found in popularity or institutions, but in obedience — walking the narrow path, despised by the world, yet loved by God.
“Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins.” — Revelation 18:4
Conclusion: The Great Deception Exposed
The falling away did not begin with loud rebellion — it began with compromise. It began when the church traded persecution for comfort, truth for tolerance, and holiness for human approval.
Now, as the age draws to a close, we are witnessing the full harvest of seeds planted long ago. The question is not whether the church has fallen away — but whether you will stand apart from it.
“Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?” — Luke 18:8
